IU Libraries celebrated Banned Books Week, September 18-24, 2022, by offering a free DIY Book Club kit featuring Out of Darkness, written by Ashley Hope Perez, an alumna of Indiana University. It was the fourth most challenged book in 2021, according to the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.

“It is our intention to maintain the quiet, reflective atmosphere of the library that our users tell us they value. On the other hand, there will be focused areas for demonstration, exploration, and creativity,” says Christina Jones, Head of the IU Libraries Education Library. Library services continue although the Education Library is temporarily closed for renovations. The Education Outpost is open and ready to serve faculty and students. Located on the balcony of the Wendell W. Wright School of Education, the temporary outpost invites you to explore its offerings: rotating children’s book collections, course reserves, pickups for held materials, and a location for returning items.

The School of Education Common Read is an opportunity for new students to engage in the intellectual and community building experience of reading and discussing a common book. This is the first year the School of Education is offering the Common Read Program for incoming SoE students. This year's selection is The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

The Education Library is closed for extensive renovation. Renovation work happens in the summer and fall of 2022, with a move-in period anticipated in spring 2023. In celebration of Black History Month 2022, the Education Library will display winners of the Carter G. Woodson Book Awards. Learn more about the "Father of Black History" and discover children's books that reflect his ideals.
