African Ephemera Collection
The African Ephemera Collection is a research-level collection that includes brochures, flyers, pamphlets/booklets, reprints, conference papers, and other items written in many languages, including African vernacular languages.

African Studies Collection
The African Studies Collection's vast print, audiovisual, and digital holdings include a significant body of materials on and in African languages as well as two special collections: the Somali Collection, considered one of the top three in the world; and the H.K. Banda Archive, a collection of primary materials on Malawi and southern and central Africa.

The Algernon Charles Swinburne Project
The Swinburne Project contains electronic editions of the works of prolific Victorian poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909). The collection includes both poetry and criticism.

Archives of African American Music and Culture
Established in 1991, the AAAMC is a repository of materials covering a range of African American musical idioms and cultural expressions from the post-World War II era. In addition to housing extensive materials documenting Black radio, the AAAMC’s collections highlight popular, religious, and classical music, with genres ranging from blues and gospel to R&B and contemporary hip hop. The AAAMC supports the research of scholars, students, and the general public worldwide by providing access to holdings which include oral histories, photographs, musical and print manuscripts, audio and video recordings, educational broadcast programs, and the personal papers of individuals and organizations concerned with black music. 

  • Black Radio Collections
    The AAAMC Black Radio Collections consist of a number of collections documenting the history of Black radio. Many of these collections also contain print and audiovisual materials.
  • Karen Shearer Collection
    Karen Shearer began her career as a publicist for Capitol Records before moving to the Westwood One Radio Network circa 1980 where she worked for the next decade as a producer on several popular music programs including Special Edition, a weekly program featuring the music of popular black recording artists. Shearer’s collection includes artist publicity materials as well as radio transcripts.
  • Logan H. Westbrooks Collection
    Logan H. Westbrooks is widely recognized as one of the central figures responsible for opening the doors of the music industry to black artists and executives. The photographs in this collection primarily document Westbrooks’ work in the music industry from the mid-1960s on, including his interactions with other top-level executives, artists, and radio personalities affiliated with WVON (Chicago), WDIA (Memphis), Capitol Records, CBS, Mercury, MCA, Stax, Philadelphia International Records, Soul Train Records, and Westbrooks’ own company, Source Records. Extensive manuscript and print materials are also available as part of Westbrooks’ collection.

AIM@IU was created to collect, preserve and make available the official records with long-term value produced by the Indiana University administrative and academic community.

Archivo Mesoamericano 
Archivo Mesoamericano is a digital archive of annotated historical and ethnographic video materials created in collaboration with the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) in Mexico, the Institute of History of Nicaragua and Central America (IHNCA) in Nicaragua, and the Museum of the Word and the Image (MUPI) in El Salvador. Collectively, the Archivo contains footage dating from 1974 to 2007, and addresses such topics as human rights, political violence, youth movements, the Sandinista government, guerrilla media, revolutionary literature, armed conflict and international relations, among other subjects.

Black Film Center / Archive (BFC/A) Finding Aids 
The Black Film Center/Archive was established in 1981 as the first archival repository dedicated to collecting, preserving, and making available historically and culturally significant films by and about black people.

Black Radio Collections
The AAAMC Black Radio Collections consist of a number of collections documenting the history of Black radio. Many of these collections also contain print and audiovisual materials.

Bloomington Faculty Council Minutes  
The Bloomington Faculty Council Minutes collection contains meeting minutes and accompanying circulars produced by representative body of elected members from the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Minutes will be available online on an on-going basis.

Board of Trustees Minutes  
The Indiana University Board of Trustees minutes includes official acts, resolutions, policies, agreements, and other business records pertaining to the governance of Indiana University. Minutes will be available online on an on-going basis.

The Brevier Legislative Reports  
The Brevier Legislative Reports are a verbatim report of the proceedings of the Indiana General Assembly from 1858 to 1887. They contain firsthand accounts that reflect the conditions of the times and aid in the understanding of the issues present in Indiana in the mid to late nineteenth century. Each bill introduced in the House and Senate is recorded in the set. Also included are addresses and veto statements by the Governor to the General Assembly.

Building a Nation: Indiana Limestone Photograph Collection 
The Indiana Geological Survey presents the recently rescued collection of over 10,000 photographs from the early to mid-1900s; these photographs were used by the Indiana Limestone Company (Bedford, Ind.) for marketing purposes, namely, to illustrate architectural styles, limestone uses, and limestone types. The images reflect the urban transformation of the United States, but were hidden for decades in a dilapidated house on the outskirts of a quarrying operation in southern Indiana. The collection shows the extensive use of Indiana limestone in commercial, municipal, institutional, and residential building projects in nearly every state.

Center for the Study of History and Memory Finding Aids  
The Center for the Study of History and Memory is a grant-funded research center that is dedicated to building work in the field of oral history while broadening the range of research projects to address the many ways that people remember, represent, and use the past in public and private life. The online collections offer a finding aid to the growing archive of oral history projects conducted to date by the Center.

Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection  
The Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection contains almost 15,000 Kodachrome slides by amateur photographer Charles W. Cushman. Mr. Cushman lived from 1896-1972 and spent a good portion of his life photographing his travels in the United States and abroad.

The Chymistry of Isaac Newton  
Isaac Newton wrote at least one hundred thirty one manuscripts, totaling approximately one million words on the subject of alchemy ("chymistry"). This scholarly online edition will be part of an integrated project that combines new research on Newton's chymistry with an online edition of his manuscripts.

Cook Music Library Digital Exhibitions
The William and Gayle Cook Music Library at Indiana University, recognized as one of the largest academic music libraries in the world, serves the world-renowned Jacobs School of Music and the Bloomington Campus of Indiana University. Its librarians and staff also support the graduate students enrolled in the nationally recognized Master of Library Science with Music Specialization program. This digital exhibition site showcases materials from the Cook Music Library’s collections.

Digital Library of the Commons  
The Digital Library of the Commons (DLC) is a gateway to the international literature on common pool resources (CPRs). This site contains a Working Paper Archive of author-submitted papers as well as CPR-related digital materials from the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis Research Library.

The Emberá (Chocó) of Darién, Panama: The Stephanie C. Kane Collection
This collection of Stephanie C. Kane’s ethnographic photographs documents everyday life and holidays among the Emberá people living along the rivers of the Darién tropical forest between 1983 and 1985. The photographs also include images of the Wounaan and Catio (along with the Emberá, the three indigenous groups known collectively as the Chocó) and people of African descent.

EVIA Digital Archive  
The EVIA Digital Archive Project is a joint effort of Indiana University and the University of Michigan to establish a digital archive of ethnographic video for use by scholars and instructors. Media in the EVIA Project consists of video collections that have been selected for inclusion by an editorial committee, and annotations have gone through a scholarly review process. The content of the Archive represents the culmination of preservation, annotation, and editorial work.

Folklore Collection Finding Aids  
The Folklore and Ethnomusicology Collection at IU is the largest, most comprehensive library collection devoted to this subject in the world. The Archives Online repository offers finding aids for the collection; other digitized objects can be found at the Open Folklore project and at Google Books or Hathi Trust.

Franchthi Photograph Collection
Franchthi Cave is located near the southwestern tip of the Argolid peninsula across the bay from the fishing village of Kiladha, Greece. In 1967, Tom Jacobsen began directing excavations inside the cave, under the sponsorship of Indiana University, Bloomington, on a permit issued through the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. The archives of the Franchthi Project include color images, an extensive collection of black and white negatives and contact prints, copies of the excavation notebooks, the original inventory books for all finds, correspondence related to the project and its symposia held in Bloomington, a few soil samples, copies of the volumes in the Franchthi publication series, copies of many articles by Franchthi staff, and other related documents.

The Frank M. Hohenberger Collection
The Hohenberger Photograph Collection consists of about 15,000 photographs and negatives of Brown County, Indiana, by photographer Frank Michael Hohenberger, 1876-1963.

The Frederick D McEvoy Collection
This is the collection of anthropologist Fred McEvoy’s photographs from his 1967-1968 research among Sabo labor migrants in southeastern Liberia.

Golden Family Papers
The Golden Family Papers, ranging from 1835 – 1963, chronicles the famous Golden Troupe, a family based traveling theater company.

The Hoagy Carmichael Collection  
This collection pertaining to the life and career of master songwriter Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael (1899-1981) represents the largest holding of materials pertaining to Hoagy Carmichael available anywhere in the world. The collection includes sound recordings, photographs, and handwritten musical compositions.

The I-Witness  
The I-Witness was a Law School publication intended for alumni, published from 1959 to 1968. The publication contains items of interest to alumni, including class reunions, faculty and building news, obituaries of notable alumni, speeches by the University President, and comments from the Dean.

Image Collections Online
Image Collections Online serves as a showcase for various image collections curated by the libraries, departments, and cultural institutions of Indiana University. Launched in December 2011, Image Collections Online includes a variety historical photographs and images of cultural objects from collections from the libraries and departments of IU Bloomington.

IN Harmony: Sheet Music from Indiana  
IN Harmony will provide access to digitized sheet music from collections at the Indiana University Lilly Library, the Indiana State Library, the Indiana State Museum, and the Indiana Historical Society by way of a custom sheet music cataloging tool and sheet music web site.

Indiana Authors and Their Books   
The Indiana Authors collection contains digitized and encoded versions of the 3-volume reference work Indiana Authors and Their Books and approximately 400 monographs by select authors from Indiana's Golden Age of Literature (1880-1920), including Theodore Dreiser, Gene Stratton Porter, James Whitcomb Riley, and Booth Tarkington.

Indiana Historic Maps Collection
Indiana Historic Maps provides images of a small portion of maps that focus on Indiana. The majority of this collection focuses on maps produced prior to 1923 unless known to be in the public domain as state or federal documents.

Indiana University Archives Exhibits   
The Indiana University Archives presents selected collections concerning the activities of Indiana University students that showcase memorable moments drawn from the holdings of the IU Archives.

Indiana University Archives Finding Aids  
The IU Archives’ primary mission is to collect, organize, make accessible and preserve records documenting Indiana University's origins and development and the activities and achievements of its officers, faculty, students, alumni and benefactors. The online collections include finding aids for nearly 500 collections held within the Archives.

Indiana University Archives Photograph Collection
The Indiana University Office of University Archives and Records Management holds a vast photograph and negative collection that comprises approximately two-million images. The majority of these were shot by Indiana University’s Photographic Services Department, Athletic Department, and News Bureau. The remaining images were shot mostly by local professional photographers, alumni, and faculty. Nearly all of the images document the history of Indiana University. The online collection contains a few thousand of these images, and is steadily growing.

Indiana's Visionary Statesman: The Richard G. Lugar Senatorial Papers  
A digital exhibition about United States Senator Richard G. Lugar. Responsible for crafting legislation related to arms control, nuclear threat reduction, and farm policy, Lugar is the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Indiana’s history.​

Jane Johnson's Manuscript Nursery Library 
The Jane Johnson Manuscript Nursery Library consists of materials devised by Jane (Russell) Johnson between 1740 and 1759 primarily for the instruction of her son. The materials consist of 438 items and are arranged in 24 groups. Included are alphabet cards, and religious and secular lesson cards, all hand-made.

The Jerry Slocum Mechanical Puzzle Collection
The Jerry Slocum Mechanical Puzzle Collection, housed at the Lilly Library, embodies a lifetime pursuit of the intriguing and the perplexing. The result is the largest assemblage of its kind in the world, with over 34,000 puzzles, collected by puzzle enthusiast, Jerry Slocum.

The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction
The Kinsey Institute houses extensive archival collections, including the papers of Dr. Alfred Kinsey, the records of the Institute and materials of other research scholars and institutes. The collections encompass print materials, film and video, fine art, artifacts, photography, and archives. 

Liberian Collections Finding Aids / Liberian Photograph Collections
The IU Liberian Collections include historical and ethnographic documents, multimedia, and artifacts in a variety of formats. The IU Liberian Collections is collecting, preserving, and making available a comprehensive range of materials and information about Liberia for researchers, students, and teachers, with special emphasis on reaching Liberians in Liberia and in the diaspora.

    William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman (1895-1971) was Liberia’s longest-serving president, in office from 1944 to 1971. The William V. S. Tubman Photography collection contains over 5,500 photographs, most documenting official functions such as trips, inspection tours, formal receptions and inaugurations. Tubman family members appear in many of the photographs in an official capacity, but the collection also includes family photographs.
  • The Willie A. and Lucile S. Whitten Collection
    The Willie A. and Lucille S. Whitten Photography Collection contains nearly 700 images reproduced from slides taken during the Whittens’ stays in Liberia in the 1960s and 1970s.

Lilly Library Finding Aids / Lilly Library Image Collection
The Lilly Library is the principal rare books, manuscripts, and special collections repository of Indiana University. Its collections contain  400,000 books, more than 100,000 pieces of sheet music, and more than 7.5 million manuscripts.  Access to finding aids for more than 300 collections is provided through Archives Online.

Media Collections Online 

Media Collections Online provides online access to audio and video collections held in IU libraries and archives, as well as for select scholarly projects. Some items in the collections are publicly accessible; others are restricted to IU users, to students in specific classes, or to those who have special access needs, all depending on the media content restrictions.

Moving Image Archive

The Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive (IULMIA) is one of the world’s largest educational film and video collections with more than 100,000 items spanning 80 years of film, video, and television production. Only a small percentage of the larger collection has been digitized but more are being added regularly. Additionally, a number of films are online but are under restricted access. Please contact IULMIA staff to see if a title has been digitized but does not show up in a search on this page.

  • Audio-Visual Center Collection
    The Audio-Visual Center was IU's department for educational media from the teens though the 1990s, though with some name changes and reorganization over the decades. This still-growing exhibit presents many of the educational films the AVC produced during that time including, among other subjects, numerous titles on the study of biology, films instructing children how to square dance, and documentaries on university life.
  • World War II Propaganda Films Production Collection
    This online exhibit includes over 200 streaming films made by the United States government during WWII to shore up home front support for the nation's war efforts. Besides reports from the European and Pacific theaters, these films show how all aspects of daily life were transformed by the war including cooking, leisure time, exercise and physical health, workplace training, and agriculture.

New Harmony Manuscripts, 1812-1871
The New Harmony Manuscripts, 1812-1871 collection contains correspondence and documents relating to New Harmony, the New Harmony Community and the activities of William Maclure, Marie D. Fretageot, Robert Owen, and others connected with the community.

Nuer Field Notes
The Nuer Field Notes is an online collection of linguistic field notes recorded by Eleanor Vandevort, who was a missionary in the South Sudan between 1949 and 1963. The site also includes Ms. Vandevort's book A Leopard Tamed and pictures taken in southern Sudan.

Outdoor Indiana   
Outdoor Indiana is the official publication of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (formerly the Department of Conservation). The magazine debuted in February 1934. Political Papers Finding Aids
The Indiana University Modern Political Papers Collection consists of the congressional papers of senators and members of the House of Representatives from Indiana and of prominent Indiana state legislators serving from post-World War II to the present.

Presidential Campaigns: A Cartoon History, 1789-1976
This digital exhibition was originally created on the IU Libraries website as a digital version of a 1976 slide collection and guide to political cartoons used in Presidential Elections.

Roger D. Branigin-Kenneth Dale Owen Manuscripts, 1825-1896
The Roger D. Branigin-Kenneth Dale Owen Manuscripts, 1825-1896 collection contains the correspondence and personal papers of Robert Owen, Robert Dale Owen, and Mary Jane Robinson Owen.

Russian Military Topographic Map Collection
Indiana University’s Cyrillic map collection consists of maps in the Cyrillic alphabet. The bulk of this collection is made up of the Soviet Red Army topographic maps, which were produced for defense and economic planning.

Sage Historic Costume Collection
The Sage Collection is maintained by the School of Art, Architecture + Design, and includes clothing, accessories, and related items from the past and present.

Sheet Music Consortium  
The Sheet Music Consortium is a virtual and searchable catalog of sheet music in the United States collected from Sheet Music Consortium founder member institutions – UCLA, Indiana University, Johns Hopkins University, and Duke University – Library of Congress, University of Washington in St. Louis University Libraries, National Library of Australia and others.  

Steelmaker-Steeltown: U.S. Steel Gary Works Photograph Collection, 1906-1971
The U.S. Steel Gary Works Photograph Collection is a series of over 2,200 photographs from the Calumet Regional Archives, Indiana University Northwest, in Gary that document the construction and growth of a town conceived and built by United States Steel Corporation. The web site also features learning activities for students in grades 4-12.

Televised Opera and Musical Comedy Database 
The Televised Opera and Musical Comedy Database documents more than a half-century of opera, operetta, and musical comedy telecasts produced in the United States. The database traces performance programming from early live presentations on experimental TV stations, to contemporary productions released on broadcast television.

Variations2 Digital Music Library 
Variations2 provides online access to selected recordings and scores from the Indiana University Cook Music Library for use by IU Bloomington students, faculty, and staff.

Victorian Women Writers Project 
The Victorian Women Writers Project produces literary works by British women writers of the 19th century. The works selected include anthologies, novels, political pamphlets, and volumes of poetry and verse drama.

Virtual CD-ROM/Floppy Disk Library 
This web site provides public access and preservation services for the nearly 5,000 CD-ROMs, DVDs, and floppy disks distributed by the GPO under the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). These tangible products have been received through the FDLP since the 1980s and consist of millions of individual files containing fundamental data on economics, the environment, population, and life and physical sciences.

War of 1812 in the Collections of the Lilly Library
This project was created to recognize the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. View materials from the war in an online exhibition, including letters, maps, and prints, from the collections of the Indiana University Lilly Library.

Working Men's Institute Archival Collections
The Working Men's Institute (WMI), established in 1838, is the oldest continuously operating public library in Indiana. With generous support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Indiana State Library, the Digital Library Program and the WMI has made historically significant collections available through the Archives Online at Indiana University.

Wright American Fiction Project
Lyle H. Wright compiled a bibliography of American fiction from the years 1851–1875, published as American Fiction 1851–1875: A Contribution Toward a Bibliography (San Marino, CA: The Huntington Library, 1957; revised 1965). He listed a total of 2,923 titles in adult prose fiction. This compilation is considered the most comprehensive bibliography of American adult fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Wright American Fiction project makes these titles available for data mining and textual analysis.

Wylie House Museum Finding Aids  / Wylie House Museum Photograph Collection / Wylie House Museum Exhibits
Built in 1835, Wylie House was the home of Indiana University's first president, Andrew Wylie, and his family. Today Wylie House is owned and operated by Indiana University as an historic house museum recreating the Wylie home prior to 1860. Collections held by the museum include correspondence from the Wylie family and related individuals dating from the 19th century to the present.  Finding aids for these collections may be accessed through Archives Online.
