Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps were made for the interests of fire insurance companies, but because they are detailed, building-by-building depictions of most urban areas, they are useful for many kinds of research. For more about Sanborn maps in general, see Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps History and the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps website at the Library of Congress.

Accessing Sanborn Maps

The Wells Library houses a large collection of Indiana Sanborn maps. On this page, you can find an inventory of our collection. Many of our pre-1923 maps have been digitized and are available to the general public through IU DataCORE. You can browse them all, or use the indexes on this page to find specific maps.

Library of Congress: Fire Insurance Maps

The LC has made much of its extensive collection of fire insurance maps available to the general public. They have maps from all fifty states, D.C., and a handful of maps from Canada, Cuba, and Mexico.

Fire Insurance Maps Online

IU affiliates can access full color Sanborn Maps (among another useful property resources such as plat books and real estate atlases) through Fire Insurance Maps Online (FIMo). Coverage includes all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

ProQuest Digital Sanborn Maps

Additionally, IU affiliates can use the PQ archive, which also has maps for all fifty states and DC. While the images are still in high resolution, they are only in black and white. However, the dates available in FIMo, PQDS, and the LC's collection aren't identical so if you can't find a map in one place, try the other.

For states other than Indiana, try UC Berkeley's Union List of Sanborn & Other Fire Insurance Maps and the Library of Congress.

1907 Bloomington Sanborn/City Directory Map

In Spring 2021, students in Dr. John Baeten's Social and Historical GIS course encoded the building information from the 1907 Sanborn map into an interactive map and then included information from a city directory of the same year. You can click on a building on the Sanborn Map and find out who lived there or what the building was used for. For more context about what 1907 Bloomington was like, Dr. Baeten also made a story map called "Reconstructing Bloomington."

Sanborn Maps at the Wells Library

Introduction

To find a particular city, use the "find" function of your browser or consult the indexes.

The year links to the IUCat record.

Where you see a hyphenated year, the first year is the original edition of the map while the second year is when the map was updated. Prior to the Great Depression, the maps were redrawn for each edition. To save money, they began reissuing old maps with updates. For example, Bloomington has maps dated "1927-1934." These maps were originally drawn in 1927 and reissued in 1934 with updates.

Links called "download" indicate that you can download high-quality PDFs from IU DataCORE.

Also noted here for your convenience are maps available on microfilm. Microfilmed maps are in black and white only.

For more help, e-mail GIMMS at libgimms@indiana.edu.
