Taxes can be a confusing swirl of regulations, but if you are a citizen/resident of the United States and its territories and receiving income, you may face the annual adventure of filing your tax returns for the Federal Income Tax. The Federal Income Tax originated as a law passed in 1861 to help fund the Civil War. There were various legal challenges to federal income tax laws until 1913 when the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified, which gave the U.S. Congress authority to impose an income tax. Tax returns filed with the federal government each year help to determine income tax and other taxes. The returns are filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
Federal Tax Return forms with instructions are located online as well as linked through the IU library catalog. The library also posted a tax guide for 2017 which continues to remain relevant for 2018. Tax day is technically April 15th. However, the date can change depending on what day of the week April 15th lands as well as certain government holidays. For 2018, tax day falls on Tuesday April 17th.
