The Center collects heavily in the following categories of materials: archival materials, newspapers and periodicals (foreign and domestic, general and specialized), foreign doctoral dissertations, U.S. state documents, USSR Academy of Science publications. The Center collects broadly in the following geographic regions: Africa, East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. In addition, the Center collects any category of material, from any geographic locale, which is deemed important to scholarly research, but has not been acquired by other institutions.

CRL's primary purpose is to collect research materials usually not available at other North American research libraries. These materials are available for people with borrowing privileges at the Indiana University Libraries through normal Interlibrary Loan procedures. When making an Interlibrary Loan request, please note the source as "The Center for Research libraries," and include the call number listed.
