Anna Marie Johnson is the Associate Dean for Research and Learning (R&L) Services. In this role, she oversees the public service functions of five IU Libraries destinations: Herman B Wells Library, Business/SPEA Library, Education Library, Sciences Library, and Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center Library. This includes approximately 40 full-time librarian positions. These librarians support the IUB campus by building world-class collections in a diverse array of subject areas, providing research support to faculty and students, and teaching students how to navigate a complex information landscape.
In addition, the R&L Division has approximately 15 staff positions and many hourly library workers who are integral to the operation of IU Libraries. As part of the administrative leadership team of IU Libraries, Anna Marie works to enact the values and enable the fulfillment of its mission and vision and its 2030 Strategic Plan, and to position the library as a resilient, high-functioning organization.
Immediately prior to her service as Associate Dean, Anna Marie served as Head of the Herman B Wells Scholars’ Commons from 2019-2022. Her previous roles as a tenured librarian at the University of Louisville (UofL) in Louisville, Kentucky, holding a variety of positions including Interim Library Director, Head of the Research Assistance and Instruction Dept., and Coordinator of Library Instruction, informed her perspectives on transparent leadership and inclusive collaboration. She has published widely on many topics related to information literacy, specifically student conceptions of the research process and reference services, and has taught as an instructor of record for honors, communication, English, and library science departments.
Anna Marie earned her M.L.S. and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Indiana University and an undergraduate degree from Miami University in Ohio. She is a native Hoosier and was delighted to have the opportunity to return to IU.
