What We Publish

The IU Libraries' Publishing Service for Non-Traditional Documents publishes texts created by the IU community (faculty, staff, and students) that are not publishable by scholarly or commercial presses, such as:

  • Books (scholarly, fiction, etc.)
  • Conference Proceedings
  • White + Working Papers
  • Reports
  • Documentation
  • Bibliographies
  • Manuals
  • Digital Scholarship

How We Publish

Our digital publishing platforms are Quarto and Pressbooks.

We publish submissions in multiple formats:

  1. HTML (left) for web access, machine readability, reflowable text, small file sizes, and facilitating reuse by others.
  2. EPUB for eReaders, accessibility by the disabled, and reflowable text.
  3. PDF for printing.
  4. DOCX for facilitating reuse.
  5. Print (Optional) for physical / paper copies and reading.

We also make available the "raw" QMD (Quarto Markdown) and TeX files to enable reuse, remixing, etc.

Publishing in multiple formats enables your work to reach a larger audience because each format has strengths and weaknesses for access and accessibility: more formats = greater access + accessibility.

Why Publish with Us

Free for Readers: Our publications are open access: available to readers worldwide for free without cost or copyright restrictions.

Free for Authors: Our publications cost authors $0. There are no author-processing charges or publication fees.

Author Rights: Our authors retain their copyright and can republish their documents elsewhere.

Barrier-Free Publishing: We publish any manuscript that meets our basic criteria and there is no manuscript-evaluation process, such as peer review or publication decisions based on return on investment. We publish works for readerships of any size, no matter if they are small, and we welcome works that may not meet the financial requirements for publication by traditional presses.

Multimedia: Unlike traditional, print-based publications, our publications can include dynamic and interactive multimedia (video, audio, data visualizations, etc.).

Rapid publishing: We publish significantly quicker than traditional presses.

Preservation: Publications are preserved permanently in IU’s Repository, Scholar Works.

Discoverable: Publications are given persistent identifiers, such as DOIs, and catalog records for IU Library’s catalog, OCLC, and WorldCat.
