The position of Dean of the Faculties was created in 1940 to give the busy President Herman B Wells some relief from the administration of academic affairs at IU. For the next three decades, the office of the dean of Faculties grew to oversee not only the development of academic programs and policies, but the areas of undergraduate education and student discipline. This collection includes records predominantly from the tenures of deans Ralph C. Collins (1959-1963), Ray L. Heffner, Jr. (1964-1966), Joseph L. Sutton (1966-1968), Joseph R. Hartley (1968-1969), and Henry H. H. Remak (1969-1974). The original office of the Dean of the Faculties has since been replaced on the Bloomington campus by the offices of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs and the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
Toyoaki Uehara (1924-1997) was a professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington from 1963-1990. This collection documents Uehara’s scholarly career and personal life, including his participation on university and departmental committees, research and publications related to Japanese language, literature, and mythology; development of international exchange programs; and his interest in the Tenrikyo religious movement.
