Plan Your Visit
We collect, organize, preserve and make accessible records documenting Indiana University's origins and development and the activities and achievements of its officers, faculty, students and alumni. To ensure this history is captured, we provide records management assistance to IU Bloomington offices, schools, departments, as well as administrative offices on the IUB campus that have system-wide responsibilities.
We invite and encourage public, students, staff, faculty, and researchers to use our collections, whether the purpose is for teaching, research, or pure curiosity.
Located on the Fourth Floor of the Wells Library East Tower; turn left upon exiting the elevator to find us.

Parking
For those traveling by car, parking is limited on the IU Bloomington campus. For those planning short visits under 45 minutes, a limited number of meters are available in the lot immediately south of the library. For longer visits, we recommend parking at the East Parking Garage which offers pay parking by the hour and is an approximately 5-10 minute uphill walk to the Wells Library. You also may purchase a short-term parking pass from IU Parking Operations or at the Visit Bloomington tourist information center at 2855 N. Walnut St.
Nearly all of our estimated 20,000 cubic foot collection is stored at an offsite preservation facility near campus known as the Auxiliary Library Facility. This means it may take two to three days to retrieve boxes for use on campus. If you are planning a visit from out of town, we recommend that you contact the archives at least one week in advance.
The University Archives is home to a large collection of rare and unique materials, so we ask our researchers to observe certain rules and handle items with care to help preserve these collections for future generations.
- Please finish food, snacks, and gum before you visit us. Covered beverages such as water or coffee are allowed in the reception area (not the reading room).
- Lockers are provided to store your belongings such as backpacks, coats, hats and umbrellas while doing research in the reading room.
- All users will be asked to complete a registration form once per calendar year.
- You may bring pencils, paper, laptop, camera, or tablets into the research space. Please, no ink pens in the Reading Room. Plugs are available on some tables for charging devices.
- We ask that you use only one box of archival material and one folder at a time. Makers will be provided to mark your place. Please maintain the documents in the order they are received. Multiple boxes, however can be requested for a visit.
- Use gloves when handling photographs or other fragile materials as directed by staff.
- Magnifying glasses are provided at each table.
Please ask if you have any questions or if we can provide any accommodations! At the reception desk, you’ll find staff who can help you show you have to request scans, navigate a finding aid, consult with you about other sources you may find useful and more.
