Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps were made for the interests of fire insurance companies, but because they are detailed, building-by-building depictions of most urban areas, they are useful for many kinds of research. For more about Sanborn maps in general, see Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps History and the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps website at the Library of Congress.

Accessing Sanborn Maps

Indiana Spatial Data Portal

Anybody can get Sanborn Maps of Indiana through the ISDP. But becasue they can be difficult for people to access through the ISDP's interface, we created this page to simplify downloading them. Before you download a map, please read the introduction to the Browse and Download section.

Fire Insurance Maps Online

IU affiliates can access full color Sanborn Maps (among another useful property resources such as plat books and real estate atlases) through Fire Insurance Maps Online (FIMo). Coverage includes all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

ProQuest Digital Sanborn Maps

IU affiliates can also use the PQ archive, which also has maps for all fifty states and DC. While the images are still in high resolution, they are also only in black and white. However, the available dates for FIMo and PQDS aren't identical so if you can't find a map in one place, try the other.

For states other than Indiana, try UC Berkeley's Union List of Sanborn & Other Fire Insurance Maps and the Library of Congress.

*NEW* 1907 Bloomington Sanborn/City Directory Map

In Spring 2021, students in Dr. John Baeten's Social and Historical GIS course encoded the building information from the 1907 Sanborn map into an interactive map and then included information from a city directory of the same year. You can click on a building on the Sanborn Map and find out who lived there or what the building was used for. For more context about what 1907 Bloomington was like, Dr. Baeton also made a story map called "Reconstructing Bloomington."

Introduction

To find a particular city, use the "find" function of your browser or consult the indexes.

The year links to the IUCat record.

In each bulleted list item, there are no more than ten maps per bullet. For most cities, the index map is located on sheet one. For larger cities, the index map may be labelled "Key," which should be at the top of the list on its own line.

Where you see a hyphenated year, the first year is the original edition of the map while the second year is when the map was updated. Prior to the Great Depression, the maps were redrawn for each edition. To save money, they began reissuing old maps with updates. For example, Bloomington has maps dated "1927-1934." These maps were originally drawn in 1927 and reissued in 1934 with updates.

Only maps published before 1923 are available for download here. Where only the number of sheets of a year is listed, then in most cases we have those maps in our collection but copyright prevented us from releasing them for download. Also, where a numbered map is not hyperlinked, then that particular sheet was either missing or too fragile for digitization.

Also noted here for your convenience are maps available on microfilm. You cannot download them here, but at least you know where to find them if you can't find them any place else. Microfilmed maps are in black and white only.

If you can't find what you need here, remember that IU affiliates have access to both FIMO (full color) and ProQuest Digital Sanborns (black and white only).

For more help, e-mail GIMMS at libgimms@indiana.edu.
