Borrowing, Circulation & Renewals

All scholars and researchers are welcome to use the resources of the IUB Libraries.

Students, faculty and staff of Indiana University, persons affiliated with Indiana University, residents of the State of Indiana, Big Ten Academic Alliance (formerly CIC) Scholars, and OCLC Scholars may borrow or check out library materials. (More information about library cards) Most libraries in the IU Bloomington Library system have the same basic policies for book checkout and renewal.  Individual libraries maintain some special collections.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

The IUB Libraries will try to get materials from other libraries for you if we do not own what you are looking for.  Any current faculty, staff, or student may use our free ILL service.

  • To request articles not owned on the Bloomington campus and for books not owned by any IU library, use the interlibrary loan (ILL) serviceFirst time users will be asked for some registration information.
  • To have articles owned only in print on the Bloomington campus delivered to you, use Request Article Delivery
  • To have books owned by an IU library delivered to a campus library near you, use Request Delivery

See Document Delivery Services for more information.

Research Assistance

The Indiana University Libraries provide a wide range of services in support of the research interests of students, faculty and staff. Within the Wells Library, the Scholars' Commons and Learning Commons provide specialized services in spaces designed to support scholarship and learning. In addition to the Wells Library there are also branch libraries across campus that support specific academic interests.

Faculty & instructors may wish to read about the Libraries' Support for University Grand Challenges (PDF) in the areas of information and data management, education and knowledge dissemination, and outreach.
