About Us

The Scholarly Communication Department at IU Bloomington Libraries provides infrastructure and services to support the IU community in creating, sharing, and preserving their scholarly work. We believe that equitable access to research and information is foundational to the production of knowledge, and are dedicated to supporting this principle within the IU community.

Across all IU regional campuses, we support Open Scholarship with impact/metrics consultations, an open journals publishing platform, OER consultations and publishing support, and a publishing service. We also manage IU Bloomington's institutional repository, IUScholarWorks.

For IU Bloomington affiliates, our department offers assistance with open access policy compliance and funding for open access publishing.

    Reference Managers and Institutional Repositories

If you’re actively engaged in research, you probably don’t need to be told how useful reference managers are. Aside from saving citations, I use mine to organize my PDFs and to participate in collaborative bibliography projects. All of this is saved to the cloud so that it’s accessible from any device.  Another reason reference managers […]

How to Cite Works in an Institutional Repository

Indiana scholars use IU ScholarWorks to host a wide range of their scholarly output: manuscripts, dissertations, open educational materials, conference slides and transcripts, event programs, and much more. Some of this material is unique to the repository, but some exists in different forms elsewhere on the web, such as a journal’s website or a conference’s […]

What is Self-Archiving (and Why You Should)

Journals come and go. Academic societies merge or fade in relevance. Projects end abruptly. Scholarly work should create a permanent record, but the reality of human and institutional lives can interfere. There’s no single solution to the tides of time, but self-archiving is one popular method for preservation. Self-archiving is a type of open access […]
