About the Collection

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps were made for the interests of fire insurance companies, but because they are detailed, building-by-building depictions of most urban areas, they are useful for many kinds of research. These large-scale maps were updated regularly, making them a valuable resource for studying change over time in towns and cities across the United States. We hold a near-complete collection of Sanborn maps for the state of Indiana, and those in the public domain have been digitized.
