Return

This page describes where and how borrowed materials may be returned to IU Libraries, as well as how fines can be incurred for overdue items.

You can return most materials at any IU Library on any IU campus during their operating hours. Selected materials such as reserve materials and Interlibrary Loans may require that they be returned in person to the correct circulation desk.

Additional Options for Returning Materials

You can return books at our drive-up book drops located on the south side of the Wells Library. One book drop is located in the Wells Library parking lot (north end), and two are just north of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center and Theatre and Drama Center in a turnaround located on Seventh Street.

Most materials may be shipped back to the Library via Campus Mail, USPS, UPS, FedEx or other parcel delivery services (postmark date is considered return date) at the following address:

Herman B Wells Library
1320 East 10th Street
Bloomington, Indiana, 47405-3907

Borrowers are responsible for material until the Library receives it, and for that reason might consider insuring material for a minimum of $150 per item when shipping it back to the Library.

IU Libraries have joined with our Big Ten Academic Alliance partners to provide an option where Indiana University students can return items to the IU Libraries by dropping off items at one of the participating libraries listed below. Students in the US without access to a drop-off library living further than 30 miles from Bloomington can request a UPS shipping label.

Overdue Items

Borrowers are responsible for renewing or returning material on or before its due date. Materials that have reached their renewal limit must be returned on or before their due date. There are no "grace periods" for overdue materials. Overdue intervals vary for recalls and other special loans.

On normal loans the borrower is billed when the item becomes 50 days overdue.  Generally, charges break down as follows:

  • billing fee - $5.00
  • database adjustment fee - $20
  • unreturned item fee - $100 (can vary with items of greater or lesser value)
