New Online Resources for India and Pakistan

Indiana University Libraries recently added a number of new online resources of interest to South Asian Studies. They covery many key events of the 20th century in South Asia. new resources contain U.S. Department of State Central Files—all documents from U.S. diplomats and consular offices in foreign countries and U.S. government agencies, private organizations, and the public—from the U.S. National Archives. Materials include special reports, minutes of meetings with foreign officials, translations of foreign government documents, and more. These are great resources for studying the Indian subcontinent in the 20th century, including the history of Independence and Partition, and the history of political relations between India and Pakistan. 

  • Hindu Conspiracy Cases: Activities of the Indian Independence Movement in the U.S., 1908-1933

Indian activists in the U.S. were active during World War I in aiding the Indian Independence movement back home with help from the German government. The materials in the collection are primarily on the U.S. government's prosectution of Indian activists for violations of the Espionage Act in two major incidents; arms shipment and fraud. This resource features records from the U.S. Justice Department Library & Immigration and Naturalization Service on the Indian Nationalist Party and other activities in the United States from 1908-1920.

  • Indian Army and Colonial Warfare on the Frontiers of India, 1914-1920

This resource contains materials on military skirmishes between British and Indian forces on the North-West frontier of India. The collection contains army lists, orders, instructions, regulations, acts, manuals, and other administrative documents from the British army.

  • India from Crown Rule to Republic: Records of the U.S. Department of State, 1945-1949

This is a collection of U.S. State Department Central Files relating to the internal affairs of India and U.S. & India relations from 1945 to 1949. Central Files are all documents from U.S. diplomats and consular offices in foreign countries and U.S. government agencies, private organizations, and the public. Materials in the collection include statistics, research studies, letters, translations, special reports on a variety of topics, and more.

  • Pakistan from Crown Rule to Republic: Records of the U.S. Department of State, 1945-1949

This collection brings together U.S. Department of State Central Files on the end of British-rule in India and the emergence of modern Pakistan after partition. Topics include the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947,  political parties and elections, unrest and revolution, human rights, government administration, finance issues, national defense, foreign relations, wars, treaties, religion, culture, trade, industry, natural resources, and more.

  • India-Pakistan Conflict: Records of the U.S. Department of State, February 1963-1966

This collection details the political affairs and relations between India and Pakistan after partition from February 1963-1966. Contains U.S. Department of State Central Files on India and Pakistan from 1963 through 1966, including documents on the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, political parties and elections, unrest and revolution, human rights, government administration, finance issues, national defense, foreign relations, wars, treaties, religion, culture, trade, industry, natural resources, and more.
