The Indiana University Archives was so sorry to hear of the death of historian Walter T.K. Nugent. Dr. Nugent was a Professor of History from 1963-1984 but also held several administrative roles, including chair of the department and director of overseas studies. Upon his resignation from IU, he accepted the Takes Professorship in American History at the University of Notre Dame, where he spent the remainder of his teaching career, retiring in 2000. Like many faculty, he continued to stay active and published beyond his retirement and throughout his lifetime he authored thirteen books, approximately 200 hundred essays and reviews, and lectured around the world.
In 2002, Dr. Nugent presented the first gift of his personal papers to the University Archives and made regular additions through 2019. He was a keen supporter of the Archives and its mission and even in his death, requested that in lieu of flowers, mourners direct gifts to the University Archives. Donations in his memory can be mailed to the IU Archives at 1320 E. Tenth Street, Wells Library E460, Bloomington, IN 47405 or can be given online at https://www.myiu.org/one-time-gift -- search for University Archives in the "Search all funds" field.
