Last night’s Herman B House Party was a crowd-pleasing record-breaker with over 1,800 students packing the Wells Library, triple the number from previous years. The first floor of the West Tower was transformed into a huge party space anchored by cotton candy in the back and pizza and popcorn on either side. At one point, the line for pizza snaked from the Reference Desk all the way to the lobby.
Dancing started around 10:30 in the lobby with music provided all night long by WIUX djs.The students concentrating on giant chess near the dance floor were sorely tested by the ruckus but remained fixed on victory with 20-30 people surrounding the board eagerly awaiting the next move.
A collaboration with the Office of First Year Experience and part of the proud Welcome Week tradition, this is the fifth straight year for this event formerly known as Game Night. Catering specifically to first-year students, the House Party was designed to give students an opportunity for safe, late-night entertainment their first week on campus.
Even with prizes every half hour, tweeting, and speed friending, one of the most popular features was the free photobooth that allowed guests to take with them a memento of their first evening spent with Herman B at the Wells Library.
