Serving under the Ruth Lilly Dean of University Libraries, Helene O’Leary’s role as Assistant Dean for Advancement is to increase public awareness of and support for the Indiana University Libraries. Because the Libraries provide every academic unit on the Bloomington campus with the resources for scholarship, her work advocates for far-reaching programming and innovations that affect the entire university and those who benefit from its research.
As head of the Office of Advancement, Helene is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Helene oversees communications related to the Libraries’ extensive collections, services, facilities, and technologies. She also coordinates media relations and marketing efforts to highlight the Libraries’ goals and achievements.
More than 12 years in the development field have prepared Helene for her present role as an administrator. In her previous positions with the Indiana University Foundation and the Indiana University School of Optometry, she led three separate, successful capital campaigns and was responsible for bringing more than $26 million to the university. She came to the IU Libraries in 2011, attracted by the opportunity to promote projects with a university-wide impact and to match donor’s passions with the Libraries’ work in a number of innovative areas.
