French & Italian

About the collection

The collection in French and Italian at the Bloomington Libraries has grown along with the university and covers, for the most part at the research level, the history and criticism of French and Italian literature; fiction, poetry, drama, theater, and other materials relating to French and Italian letters and literary life; publications in those two languages about literature, its subdivisions and aspects; and most categories of linguistic materials in French, with somewhat less comprehensive coverage for Italian. Historical strengths include Voltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot; Renaissance literature; materials published after World War II and especially since 1950, including contemporary poetry; and Francophone literature from outside of France.

The bulk of the collection is housed in the Wells Library and the Auxiliary Library Facility. Related collection locations include the Lilly Library and the Kinsey Library.
