Indiana University Libraries is excited to announce a donation from Dipa Sarkar, M.D. of the collected works of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), a Calcutta native and Nobel Prize-winning poet. During his lifetime Tagore wrote several volumes of poetry and other works of literature including dramas, travel diaries, and two autobiographies. Dr. Sarkar's donation is a complete 15-volume collection, Rabindra Racanabali, in Bengali; the collection marks the the centennial celebration of Tagore's birth in 1961.
Dr. Sarkar was born outside Calcutta in 1931, where she later began her career as a gynecologist. She then studied pathology and did a residency in the United States. In 1969, Dr. Sarkar moved to Terre Haute, Indiana to practice pathology and teach medical technology at Indiana State University. Since her retirement in 1990, Dr. Sarkar continues to serve her community by helping those in need through volunteering, taking leadership roles with charities, and teaching English at her local library.
