Carey Champion (formerly Beam) holds degrees from Indiana University in sociology and library and information science, concentrating her master’s degree studies in archives and special collections with special interests in archives management, primary source instruction and competencies, historic house museum interpretation, and historic research. Carey’s work as a liaison between Wylie House and the broader community and her role in support of the university’s teaching and research missions are strengthened by her background as a former community health educator and as collections manager for the Monroe County History Center.

As a librarian and Director of the Wylie House Museum, Carey focuses her efforts on increasing the academic integration of the museum with IU courses and departments. Her research is on the academic use and potential of museums of culture and history in higher education. At IU, she facilitates courses in subjects from a wide variety of disciplines, providing tours, primary source instruction, and assignment/research design using the museum’s resources. She also oversees open hours, reference services, and programming at the Wylie House for students, faculty, researchers, and the community so that the history of the Wylies and the home as they relate to campus, Bloomington, and the 19th century generally are accessible to all.
