IU is celebrating 70 years of close and lasting friendship with the people of Thailand, and recently opened a new ASEAN Gateway office. The IU-Thailand relationship has a long and rich history, much of which is documented through various IU Libraries collections.
In the 1960s and 1970s, IU helped establish 16 teacher colleges in Thailand, many of which are now four-year, comprehensive universities. In 1960, a groundbreaking exhibition, The Arts of Thailand, was organized by IU and traveled around the United States. Remarkable for its sheer size (the US Navy transported the precious objects) and its incredible significance, the exhibition was lauded by national and international journalists of the time.
