Access + publishing: Wiley journals renewed
Most IU campuses part of national agreement negotiated through the Big Ten

Above is a screenshot of a December 2023 open access article in the Journal of the American Heart Association, "Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Peripheral Artery Disease in Rural South Africa: A Cross‐Sectional Analysis of the HAALSI Cohort" which was published through a negotiated agreement for Indiana University authors. From 2022-2025, nearly 32,000 Big Ten member-authors published 15,000 open access articles in Wiley hybrid and gold journals at no cost to authors.
Wiley Open Access Agreement Finalized Through 2027
Through collective negotiations with all members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, IU faculty from most IU campuses can continue publishing open access in Wiley hybrid journals through Dec. 31, 2027 — with no article processing charges (APCs). IU also continues to maintain full read access (perpetual) for all Wiley journals. IU Southeast does not participate in the Wylie agreement.
What’s new in this agreement:
Wiley is limiting free APC publishing in their 500+ gold OA journals. All submitted articles for Wiley gold journals are guaranteed a fee waiver if submitted by Aug. 31, 2026 and then accepted by Wiley.
Articles submitted and accepted for gold journals between August 31, 2026, and December 31, 2027, will require funding from sources outside IU Libraries.
What has not changed:
Under the 2026-27 agreement, eligible corresponding authors affiliated with Indiana University continue to have the option to publish an unlimited number of open access articles in Wiley’s hybrid OA journals without paying APCs for articles. These costs have been negotiated as part of the agreement. There are approximately 1270 hybrid journals. IU Southeast will continue to remain outside of the agreement.
This new agreement reflects the consortium’s ongoing commitment to advancing open, accessible scholarship while ensuring sustainable access to high-quality research for faculty, students, staff, and researchers. From 2022-2025, nearly 32,000 Big Ten member-authors published 15,000 open access articles in Wiley hybrid and gold journals at no cost to authors.
