How to Access IULMIA's Collections and Services

Gloved hand inspecting 16mm film

There are many ways to engage with the Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive. Whether you're a researcher, instructor, student, filmmaker, or curious viewer, the resources below outline how to discover our collections, request a visit, attend a screening, or work with our staff.

Visit Media Collections Online

Watch and listen to our collections using Media Collections Online (MCO).

Use the search bar on the top right to find specific titles. Or browse through titles using the filters on the left-hand side of the screen. Filtering by “Sound Recording” will display all accessible audio recordings. Filtering by “Moving Image” will display all accessible film/video records. Use additional filters like “Unit,” “Collection,” or “Physical Format” to help focus inquiry results. As additional cataloging, copyright research, and editing is done on digitized files, more materials will be accessible on MCO.

Search Our Catalogs and Finding Aids

There are over 34,000 catalog records of IULMIA held titles in IUCAT, Indiana University Libraries’ online catalog. Most of the films in the IU Audio-Visual Center collection are searchable in IUCAT.

Over 600 cubic feet of paper records from various IULMIA collections have Finding Aids. Finding Aids can be searched on Archives Online, Indiana University's portal for accessing descriptions of archival and special collections. As paper-based collections are digitized, they will be accessible via Digital Collections.

Many materials in IULMIA's collections (including those under copyright and those not yet fully processed) may not be viewable in a public search. After doing an initial search, it is recommended that you contact IULMIA (iulmia@iu.edu) with your research topic(s) and we'll see if we can identify additional materials!

Footage Sales and Licensing

IULMIA offers footage sales and licensing for documentary, educational, and creative projects. Review our policies and procedures for footage sales.

Visit Us for Research

IULMIA is located in the Media Services suite on the ground floor of the Wells Library. We are open for research by appointment only Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 5pm. Our collections are stored off-site at Indiana University's Ruth Lilly Auxiliary Library Facility, so materials must be requested in advance. To schedule a visit, please contact us at iulmia@iu.edu.

Request a Class Visit or Tour

IULMIA welcomes instructors interested in bringing their classes to engage with archival media, equipment, and preservation practices. Class visits and tours support hands-on learning with primary source materials and can be tailored to your course's learning goals.

We require a minimum of 8 weeks' lead time for class visit and tour requests. To submit a request, please fill out our Class Visit and Tour Request form.

Attend a Screening or Event

The Indiana University Libraries Screening Room (IULMIA SR) hosts public screenings and media-centered events throughout the academic year, including our ongoing You Probably Haven't Seen This Before (YPHSTB) series featuring guest-curated programs drawn from the archive. Learn more about the IULMIA Screening Room and visit our Instagram for upcoming events.
